Time Travel

Ufff…we have always heard about time travel in a lot of stories and movies. We have seen our heroes creating a time machine which travels back and forth in time.Is this really true or just a science fiction?

Assume that you have a time machine which could take you into the future. You are in 2011 and you are planning to go to 2100 within a short period of time ( maybe in 1 or 2 weeks)and see the completely new world in your future. What happens now? Will you be able to return to your present from where you started your journey?

Now you have traveled in a time machine which could travel back in time and you are few decades back in time. What happens if you meet one of your ancestors and make a permanent mark on his hand? Will you be able to come back to the present and see the same mark on his hand? Is this really possible?

Let’s see what our scientists have said about Time travel.

According to scientists Time travel is theoretically possible but practically impossible with the current technology. Let me explain how it’s theoretically possible.

To know about time travel, we should first know what is time. Time is the measuring system which is used to sequence events, to compare the duration of events and intervals between them. Time keeps changing in your day to day life. When you go by car it only takes 10 min to reach your office from your home but it’s not the same case when you choose to walk to reach the same office. Time goes fast when you are with your friends but not the same case when you are home alone. What is the reason behind all these? There is no change in time when we look into our watch. How is this possible?

You actually don’t find any change in time when you look at your watch as it’s going to be minor difference. A change in billionth of second or a nanosecond but it actually changes because time is not constant.

According to our scientists there are several ways by which you could time travel. One of the popular ways is traveling in the speed of light. As per Einstein’s relativity law, nothing could travel faster than the speed of light which is 186,000 miles per second ( now scientists have discovered a particle called neutrinos which could travel faster than light but this experiment is not yet proved).

Assume that you get a space machine which travels in speed of light. You are sitting inside the machine and the machine takes off. Once the space machine begins to move and it slowly reaches the speed of light. Now you start noticing some weird things happening inside the machine. Just look at your watch the time moves very slowly and you will notice that you yourself doing things in slow motion. Yes that’s what happens when you travel in the speed of light, Everything slows down. Now imagine that you are traveling around the earth seven times per sec for a week. Now your are done with your journey to the future. When you reach the earth, you will notice something extraordinary has happened. Yes! You are now 100 yrs forward in time when compared to your present which has already now become your past but you have not become old. For you just a week has passed in your life. Unfortunately it’s a one way travel you can’t go back to your present.

It’s very amazing to learn that everything including the changes in your body happens with respect to time like you becoming old, getting wrinkles and change in ur hair color etc..everything is related to time).

There is another way of time travel which leads us to the future.

Some scientists say it’s possible with a Black hole. A black hole is a region of spacetime from which nothing, not even light can escape. Its gravity is extraordinary so It just absorbs everything that hits its horizon and it’s said to be the no return zone. Time slows down for you as you go near a black hole. Imagine that you are sending a clock into the black hole. As the clock moves towards black hole you can notice the time in the clock slows down and once it reaches the center of black hole you will be amazed to see the time completely stops. This doesn’t mean that clock stopped working but the time itself has stopped. Yes there is no such thing called time inside the black hole. Imagine what will happen if there is no time. NOTHING could be the right answer.

So traveling around black hole also would take you into the future as it slows down time(exactly what happened inside the time machine which traveled in the speed og light).

Now let me explain one more way to time travel which could take you back in time. Our Milky way galaxy is around 100,000 light years wide, so light from its more distant stars can take thousands upon thousands of years to reach earth. Glimpse that light, and you are looking back in time. You don’t even know if those stars exist or not but you still see them. So now do you think time travel to the past is possible?

There is short cut called warm hole which allows you to travel back in time. This is mathematically proved. Imagine wormhole as a connection string which connects two region of space that means two universes. It also connects two regions of time. So when you travel through the worm hole it just leads you to future .again future? Confused right? :P

Ok! This is how it works. You just travel only for 4 hrs to reach a place(let’s say andromeda galaxy) through worm hole which could take 2 million yrs to travel in the speed of light. So it takes 4 more hrs to come back to earth. When you come back to earth you see that it’s 4 million yrs ahead(remember you used short cut which only took 8 hrs to come to ur future). Now you see different people on earth and you take one of them with you to travel through the worm hole and repeat the journey backwards and reach the place from where you started. Now the person who accompanied you has traveled backwards in time. He will see the world that is 4 million yrs back in time. This concept is bit difficult to understand but this is how it works :P

  1. Hi vidz, one more nice blog.. sometimes everyone wish to go back in time re-live and redo (some might probably want to undo) things in life :P or have a fancy weekend trip to the future :)

actually from my perspective there is no such thing as time. although I totally agree with the theory that when something travels faster ~speed of light then time factor gets slowed down.

It might be possible in the future to send things or even people to future.. lets say we are able to create a shuttle that could travel at super high velocity... it is simply going to freeze things inside the shuttle at sub atomic level.. you ll be still young as present but everything around you would have changed and you wake up in the future when u get out of the suttle.... but it is all similar to keeping a apple in a freezer, take two apples keep one inside a freezer and one in the open air leave it for a week(make sure u don't let me near them :) otherwise you will then have to research how the apple vanishes into thin air :P) after a week look what happens, the apple on open air would have aged normally and degraded.. but one in the freezer gets to see the future as young and fresh because at that temperature all the chemical process requires to degrade the apple will not happen...

similarly at light speed, everything inside the shuttle stops doing what it supposed to do at a sub-atomic level.

but I would say the concept of worm holes taking back to past are purely science fiction, because there is no such thing exists as past.

but the concept of worm holes are true, but we just have to wait and see where its going take us.

lets hope someone from the future comes through and gives us the answer :P

but I don't really have clue how something like time concept came into existence, I mean when people started using such a measure... let me know when it all started... is it ancient Mayan who recorded time and created the controversial calendar, I sure it came long before that.. Egyptians or one our veda people :P or perhaps the cavemen who started the fire :P

sorry my comment have to be so this big like a blog post, Its just.. its my favorite topic too :)

  2. @Arun: Thanks a lot:) i liked tat apple example:P btw I agree with you..there is nothing called TIME but at the same time, nothing is possible without time..:P Time is just a hypothetical concept. About worm hole thing.. even i dont think going back in time is possible but our scientists have come up with some theory so as u said we have to wait and see:) btw i will let you know about when this concept was first used :)

  3. VIEWERS DISCRETION IS ADVISED, THIS COMMENT IS NOT MEANT TO HURT / JUDGE ANYONE'S BELIEF OR FEELINGS, THIS IS JUST MY VIEW OF LOOKING INTO TIME.

Time is just a scalar quantity, its always +ve, just like mass and other things, you cannot have your mass as -44/9.8 kg on earth :P

and one more thing, what i meant by scalar is.. time always denotes an interval between any two events, when i say I am 26yrs or 3hrs or billion yrs its simply a scalar value from 1985 to 2011.

or simpler example is when I say its 11:00pm.. it means an interval, 23 hours has completed from the beginning of the day(12:00am)

that is why we have so many calendars and so many astrological things creeping all around us..

we all want to keep track of duration... simple as how long will it takes to cook my pizza to how long will it take to build a pyramid :P

that is why something like time have to be invented...

that is why ancient people used naturally occurring periodical events such as position of stars and constellations to plot longer duration like months, years and used shorter events like sun rise to denote days...

that is how astrological signs got into picture, people (at the time when there is no iphone or paper calendar available) will simply note down the constellations and visible planetary positions that appear when are born.

if that same constellation and appropriate stars and visible planets appears in the night sky for 20 times then u are 20yrs old...

(somewhere in between or in parallel religion also grows rapidly with science, to co-exist people started mixing things up and thus came astrology, and later people wanted to make it into full time profession, so to spice things up they ve related everything from building houses(vaasthu).. to celebrations of life's precious moments and decisions like marriage.. and all other ceremony into it. then final touch is good time.. bad time... raagu kaalam etc...)

OK lets come back to our topic of TIME...

later as man(and women of-course) evolves into modern society... we needed smaller quantities of time to measure faster things... thus came smaller quantities to divide days into hours... minutes.. seconds...

as the need rises like we needed to measure smaller time intervals like computer speed.. lifetime of nutrino..etc.. and we keep inventing and started using smaller and smaller time intervals like milli second, micro, pico second and go on....

I hope you now have a clear picture of how time itself started... simple as that :P

That is why i commented on your first blog as "know thyself", what I really meant was if you look into the vast universe for the answers .. chances are that you will never find an answer.. but the answer lies within our-self... look into smaller things the chances of finding an answer is more...

and Finally FACEBOOK has invented the "Timeline" so you can go record all the events that happens as it is... and view them from the point when you are born to right now... Literally you can scroll through your entire life.. It will be fun to watch sometime later in the "FUTURE"..

I think FB will be your time machine to the past

I still wonder How the hell did I relate Time with Facebook :P

    :)

  4. Hi Srividhya,
Wonderful topic again. Lovely description of most of the theories on time travel. There is one more which has been used a lot in movies and agreed as one of the possibility of time travel is the existance of parallel universes. We exist in each of this universe and these universes are like various stations in our life journey at different points in timeline of our life. We can possibly find a way to travel to parallel universes to travel through time.

@Arun: Lovely view on time. I can see what you mean when you say there is no such thing as time.

Here is my thought on it. Your arguments are very valid if I were to say that there is something like an absolute time. But time does exist in relative realms. You cannot deny the fact that between 2001 and 2011 you have spent 10 years. The unit might vary, year is something that we have deviced as a unit to measure, may be we call it 2 dyears (just a made up unit). But still the duration is the same and this time duration does exist. By time travel, I understand going back in time by a duration of time, or by going forward by a duration of time. To a time pre historic. To a time before my biological parents were born. Or to a time when I was a small baby.
By freezing, one can save self from the effect of the duration of time on the withering body, still the time duration taken for us to move forward remains the same. Right?

  5. HI...

    Good THings :
Nice construction and clearer explanation.. The thought was more clearly brought in. There are a lot of "IT" factor making the reading interesting.

    Bad Thing::
a lot of 'could's and 'might's are descibed as 'would's.. I like the hypothesis, but the concept of traveling in time was over looked. I mean, I love the concept, I am far more interested in time machines, but the sad part is that we as humans are yet to find their first working model of time machine. So all the hypothesis, well the assumptions are all hypothesis atleast until proved, continue to remain as hypothesis sadly.

"There is another way of time travel which leads us to the future."

The certainty in the tone was a little high for a scientific subject. Had it been a superstitious belief, i would not questioned it.

In short, I loved the way it is composed, but the scientific facts might lack some support for proof of information as the concept of Time Machine is NOT YET a Practically Proved Implementation. :)

  6. @Arun : Nice description:) I agree with most of your points but as far as i know these astrological predictions, good time and bad time calculations are all related to the planetary positions which are not visible to the human's naked eye and now i started believing astrology to an extent after reading about it.Even today there are people who can say the exact time just by looking at sun but more skills are needed to find out the number of planets and its positions without any equipment, So i think there should have been something more than what we think. I read somewhere that our ancestors preferred to close their eyes and look into the universe than looking into it with their eyes open...That way they made a connection with the outer universe through which they found out the secrets..This state could be attained through meditation and yoga...I'm not too spiritual but this is what i read :P ...i just found this interesting :)

  7. @Chan : Thank a lot :)Yeah i agree with you...That could also be possible through worm holes :)

  8. @SSS : Thank you :)I'm sorry for being very sure about all these hypothetical scientific theories.. As you said it's wrong to come a decision without any practical proof..I assure that i will use 'could's' and 'might's' in my future posts :P
